The Museum is home to the largest collection of gem carvings by Russian expatriate Vasily Konovalenko outside of Moscow, and the only such public collection and display in the Americas. In Russia, Vasily Konovalenko continued making gem sculptures, and around 1974 an American wholesale diamond dealer saw the sculptures and offered Konovalenko a house in the United States, machinery and minerals if he would emigrate to the United States and continue gem carving. After visiting numerous institutions and homes in Russia and Europe, they published Stories in Stone: The Enchanted Gem Carvings of Vasily Konovalenko (University Press of Colorado) in 2016. Also that year, the Museum loaned three sculptures to the Moscow Kremlin Museum for the first comprehensive exhibition on the artist and his work in Russia in nearly 50 years. This film tells a story about life and development of the remarkable artist and stone-carver Vasily Konovalenko. His masterpieces are on display at the Mosco Vasily Konovalenko Gem Sculptures.
